2008.002.0179Description
Silent film footage of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence E. Chapman (a New York financier and his wife Adelaide) and their time at Mulberry Castle a/k/a Mulberry Plantation, ca. 1926-1932. Includes scenes of the Chapmans, their guests, and their house employees. Features scenes of duck and deer hunting, picnicking, fishing, boating, and horseback riding.
Representative of the wave of wealthy northerners who purchased "leisure plantations" in the Lowcountry in the early 20th century.
Assembly of a few reels of 8mm film that had originally been transferred to videotape. Spans 1927-1932, but reproduced in no particular order. Highlights include:
*Views of Mulberry Plantation, including the landscape and gardens (pre- and post-Loutrel Briggs design), various buildings and other locations on the grounds (some identified, some not, e.g., the boat house, kitchen building, entrance gate, rice fields, shed by kitchen garden, slave cabin, possible farm buildings, etc.).
*St. James Church (with door signage not there today)
*Strawberry Chapel (shows the brick above-ground wall to the underground vault)
*Pompion Hill
*Rice Hope Plantation
*Departures from and arrivals at the train station (Moncks Corner?)
*Wreckage from a train accident
*Ferry transporting horses and men across the river
*Car arriving at Mulberry (NJ license plate, 1927)
