MEETING.015.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1770; additions late-19th century. This structure, built by John Edwards, is typical of Charleston double houses of the 1760s and 1770s. It features four rooms on the first floor divided by a central entrance stair hall, and four rooms on the second floor. The house is unusual, however, in rusticated wood front: cypress siding cut to stonework, a practice also employed by George Washington in his house at Mount Vernon. Records indicate that a number of other Charleston houses featured this detailing. Edwards was prominent in local politics during the American Revolution, serving with "Dictator" John Rutledge's privy council. He was later imprisoned by the British and exiled to St. Augustine for his role in the Revolution. The semicircular piazza on the south side of the house was added at the beginning of the 20th century. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains FOHG house histories (ca. 1978, 2004); other narrative history (unattributed, undated); building history from Architectural Guide to Charleston (by Simons & Thomas); newspaper articles (including DYKYC 1932, 1977, and 1981); HCF correspondence related to proposed repairs (1983, 1984, 1998); sketch of the front facade (undated, unattributed); photocopy of photo of front facade (unattributed, 1978?).Collection
