Paul and VirginieContext
The story of Paul et Virginie was first published in 1787 by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre. It tells the story of a boy and girl that grow up on the French held island of Mauritius where everyone shares the same possessions and have equal amounts of land that they farm together. The childhood friends fall in love, but are separated when the girl's wealthy aunt summons her back to the mainland. This story tells of the corruption of a child of nature by false sentimentality and reflects the upper-class French society.Collection
