Scope and Content

The three houses at 23-27 Meeting Street were constructed 1760-1800; altered 19th century. These three single houses comprise an important streetscape of 18th century masonry structures. All three have had Victorian alterations, but 23 Meeting Street, originally built by provision merchant Albert Detmar, has retained its late-19th century alterations. The two southernmost of the three, 23 Meeting Street and 25 Meeting Street, date from 1770 and 1760 respectively, while 27 Meeting was erected after the Revolution. 27 Meeting Street served as headquarters for Beauregard in 1862. File contains photocopy of photo of gate (undated, unattributed); scant chain-of-title (1939-2001) research notes; photocopies of Sanborn Maps (1888-1955); house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston (1984); entry from 62 Famous Houses; manuscript excerpts detailing Beauregard's headquarters 1861-1864 (unattributed, from SCHS).
