MEETING.031.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1792; altered after 1884. In 1792 Lt. Gov. James Ladson erected a 2-story single house on a large lot facing a small court then called Ladson Court. The court was not cut through to King Street to become Ladson Street until 1895. The third floor was added in the middle of the 19th century, and the Poppenheim family, who purchased the property in 1877, installed bay windows on the first and second floors and erected the Victorian garden house.
File contains graduate student report (Leah Applewhite, 2019) on the history of the house, which includes historical and chain-of-title research, maps, photos, and other supporting documentation; College of Charleston Candelight Tour garden history (1979); draft of other narrative history (Craig M. Bennett, undated); brief article from 1958 Preservation Progress (with photo); news article (EP, 8/6/1968).Collection
