Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1770. This 3½ story stuccoed brick building was erected by William Harvey, a Charlestown merchant. During the late 19th century, the building was "Victorianized" and a storefront installed in the first level. The building was restored as a residence in 1982-83. (Source: Information for Guides of Historic Charleston) Four files contain legal documentation of the covenant on the property; documentation related to HCF's acquisition of the property and plans for its renovation for reuse, including community controversy; correspondence and other documentation related to the sale and management of the property; annual inspection reports; requests for alterations; elevations (Kim Baker, 1981); elevations and floor plans (undated, unattributed); historical/chain-of-title research information; FOHG house history (undated); other narrative histories including "A Partial History" by Robert P. Stockton; newspaper articles (including DYKYC); house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; documentation of HCF's interest in the house, including the possible adaptive reuse of it as a Preservation Center and ticket office; copy of HCF easement information card (TMS number, year of construction, etc.); photocopies of plats and maps.
