Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1810, altered ca. 1900. The typical early 19th-century single house at 68 Meeting Street is distinguished from others of its class by the dramatic turn-of-the-century alterations to the facade and piazzas. A projecting oriel window on the 2nd floor and a single plate window on the first replace the traditional three-bay facade, and two semicircular bays and Victorian detailing embellish the simple 2-story piazza. John Cordes Prioleau, a planter on the Back River, built the structure after he purchased the property from his father in 1808. William Bachman Chisolm, a prosperous fertilizer dealer, updated the building after his purchase of the property in 1894. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) File contains FOHG house history (1997); narrative history by Robert P. Stockton (undated, likely 1960s); newspaper articles (including 1983 DYKYC), realtor's information packet* (ca. 1994). *Realtor's information packet also includes a narrative history by Stockton; however, it appears to be later and possibly revised from original.
