MEETING.076.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1785. This three-story wooden single house with low-pitched hipped roof, built by Judge Elihu Hall Bay, presently serves as the rectory of St. Michael's Church. Judge Bay, a Maryland native, purchased the lot in 1785 and tore down the Indian trading store that originally stood here. He also owned the lot immediately south, where, according to a plat of 1789, he cultivated a formal parterre with shrubs and flower beds in front and a kitchen garden with fruit trees at the rear. The Neoclassical door screen of the piazza is of particular note, as is the line of original brick outbuildings, including kitchen, laundry, stables, and slave quarters, which stretches along St. Michael's Alley. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains FOHG house history (undated); other narrative history (unattributed, undated); draft of what appears to be a Part I certification application (physical history, architectural character, historical associations) (undated, unattributed); newspaper article (1980 DYKYC); house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; photocopy of photograph; photocopy of 1792 plat showing plan and adjacent garden.Collection
