Scope and Content

The Commercial Club stood on Meeting Street between the Charleston County Courthouse and Hibernian Hall. The building was a late-19th century row of four attached tenements, remodeled as a residential/businessmen’s clubhouse ca. 1904. In 1918 the clubhouse was converted into the Timrod Inn (later known as Hotel Timrod). The porches were added some time before 1940. The hotel closed at the end of 1955, and in 1964 it was demolished to clear a site for the Charleston County Office Building. (Source: Preservation Society, Halsey Map Project) No additional building history on file. Needs further research. File contains research notes (Sarah Fick, 2011) and photocopy of Preservation Halsey Map entry; newspaper articles about the development of the site (1966, 1967, no date); "Preservation Progress" article mentioning possible demolition (with photo of 101 Meeting Street and Timrod); captioned newspaper photograph showing demolition of hotel (1965); photocopy of engraving (2005.019.07); copy of architectural drawing "Proposed Location of County Office Building Adjacent to Court House" by Simons and Lapham, showing the block bounded by Meeting Street, Broad Street, King Street, and Queen Street, with corresponding letter from Preservation Society (1967).
