MEETING.173.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1874; rehabilitated 1982. D.A.J. Sullivan, contractor and builder. The front portion of this 3-story structure was constructed a decade after the Civil War by an immigrant German businessman as his restaurant and saloon, with a residence on the upper floors. After construction commenced, the News and Courier stated that it would be "handsome" with "water works" throughout and the front finished with "decorated metal." The arcaded first floor portico with two central engaged Corinthian columns survives, as do the Italianate style window surrounds. The cornice has long since been removed, but pressed-metal quoining at the corners survives. Originally the interior plan of this structure departed from the Charleston single house model with suites of rooms and a rear staircase. After Tiefenthal's death in 1889, his widow married the owner of the nearby Pavilion Hotel, Francois Opdebeeck Jr., and sold this site to William J. O'Hagan. Declining through the 1970s, the structure was rehabilitated in 1982 as one of the first bed-and-breakfast inns in Charleston's tourism boom of the 1980s. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; letter designating building as contributing to historic district (National Register part I certification application not on file); easement appraisal report; annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; newspaper articles (including DYKYC, 1983); advertisement for A. Tiefenthal, (Business Guide to Charleston, 1889); 1886 Earthquake damage assessment; Hurricane Hugo damage survey.
