Scope and Content

Charleston Hotel constructed ca. 1838. Charles F. Reichardt, architect. Bank of America Place (previously known as Nations Bank Place), constructed in 1989-90. Aubry Architects; SBF Design. Designed by a Florida architectural firm in the modern classic style, this large bank building with a raised multistory portico harkens back to its predecessor on this site. This was the location from 1838 to 1960 of the great Charleston Hotel, a magnificent Greek Revival structure with giant order Corinthian columns probably designed by the Prussian-born architect Charles F. Reichardt. The demolition of the hotel in 1960 for a motor inn (Heart of Charleston Motor Inn) remains a dark memory for many Charleston preservationists. File contains newspaper articles about both buildings (including 1981 DYKYC); advertisement for Heart of Charleston Motor Hotel (1960); Charleston Magazine brief article (2006); three HCF memoranda (1989) regarding plans for 200 Meeting Street; photocopy of Charleston Hotel envelope (illustrated); photocopy of advertisement for Charleston Hotel (1854).
