CHURCH.066.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1784. John McCall, the city treasurer, acquired a site that probably was burned over in the fire of 1778. The lot once contained a brick house owned successively by Thomas Rose Sr. (father of the builder of 59 Church Street) and by the wealthy merchant Anthony Matthews. McCall's house began as a single house on a raised brick basement, capped by a hipped roof with projecting dormers. Alterations producing apartments in the mid-20th century included enclosures on the street side harm the effect of the multi-tiered, Greek Revival style piazzas. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains FOHG house history (2013); house history with chain-of-title (Laura Sparks, 1987); newspaper photograph with caption regarding demolition threat (1964); occupancy history (1990-1999) from Old Codgers' Charleston Address Book; 1886 Earthquake damage assessment survey; Hurricane Hugo damage assessment survey and photo (see Media link); Bachelor's degree (historic preservation) essay "66 Church Street: A Profile of an Eighteenth Century Building in the Original Colonial Settlement of Charleston," which includes historical and deed research, maps, photos, and other supporting documentation (Caroline Agid, 2016).Collection
