MEETING.266-270.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1840-50; renovated 1970s. William Gayer, owner of the nearby carriage works, built the large 3-story parapeted house with a later enclosed piazza at 266 Meeting Street in 1840. Used as a boardinghouse by the 1880s, the building continued as a hostelry of varying quality until the 1960s, when it was known as the Southern Air Hotel and apartments. A new owner renovated it as an office and apartment building in the 1970s. The similarly styled Hart Houses were built more than a decade apart and received Italianate style detailing after the earthquake of 1886.
File contains newspaper articles (one undated portion, other 1974 w/th photograph); building history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; City Directory research notes (1890-1940); photocopies of photos.Collection
