MEETING.272.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1872; rehabilitated 1984. Although the adjoining house at 66½ Society was built about 1853, the principal Meeting Street building at this site was erected after the Civil War by Dr. George Caultier, who kept his apothecary shop on the first floor. By 1898 the property had been acquired by Albert L. Stokes, who founded one of the first business colleges in the United States. Stokes' s institution trained hundreds of women during the next four decades as they entered the business world in the World War II years. Caultier's building reflects an interesting variant on the Italianate style with its arched and rusticated first floor and its semicircular-headed windows on the upper floor.
File contains newspaper article (DYKYC 1984); captioned newspaper photograph of building during restoration (1983); photocopy of engraving of building (source not indicated).Collection
