Scope and Content

Constructed 1870; rehabilitated early-1980s. Abrahams and Seyle, architects. This 2-story Gothic Revival building stands on a raised basement at the intersection of Meeting Street and George Street. Formerly serving a German fraternal organization, it had a number of uses before being taken over in 1984 as the headquarters of the Washington Light Infantry, a local military unit, founded in 1807. It also served as a masonic temple. Lancet arched windows and parapet provide the major decoration for this large stucco building, partially enclosed by fencing from the old Radcliffe-King House and accessed by gates designed by Albert Simons for the Infantry in 1955, reflecting the unit's service in most wars since the War of 1812. File contains newspaper articles (1982, 1984, both with photographs).
