MEETING.332-334.1Scope and Content
The L. Mendel Rivers Federal Office Building and site are located on the northeast corner of Meeting Street and Henrietta Street, in Wraggborough. Various structures occupied the site until their demolition in the 1940s to make way for a new U.S. post office. The seven-story building with a parking lot behind it was constructed ca. 1964. Efforts to have the building demolished were opposed by Historic Charleston Foundation and other preservationists. The property was recently (2016) converted into a hotel.
File contains graduate student report (Emily E. Martin, 2007) on the history of the lot and buildings that contains historical and chain-of-title research, maps, photos, and other supporting documentation (including a history of Wraggborough); news articles 1949-2011; HCF presentation on the building's architectural significance (2008); HCF staff research notes; email clarifying information about the architect (1/21/2009); construction details and specifications; GAO documentation about the building; GSA Office of Property Disposal Online Auction brochure (2007); draft of City of Charleston Civic Design Center overview related to the redevelopment of site (ca. 2008); conceptual design plans commissioned by the current developer (2009).Collection
