MEETING.337.1Scope and Content
Marion Square (a/k/a Citadel Square) was developed by 1830 and attained its present conformity by 1883. During the Revolutionary War tabby fortifications stretched across this site for the defense of Charleston from British attack. Developed after the war, with Lowndes Street running east-west through this space and Tobacco Street at its northern end, it soon became a muster ground for the State Arsenal, designed by Frederick Wesner and erected in the wake of the discovery of the Denmark Vesey insurrection plot in 1822. Finished some years later, the arsenal stood 2 stories with a central arch and interior courtyard. The site became home to the South Carolina Military College in 1843. The Old Citadel, as it is now called, was renovated on several occasions before the college was relocated to Hampton Park in 1822. The structure was raised in the late-19th century, and two wings were added on the east and west in 1950. Although the central arch is original, the upper stories are additions and much of the fenestration has been altered. In May 1958 Charleston County ordered the demolition of the west wing of the Old Citadel, designed by Edward B. White in 1850, due to the proposal to build a new library on the site [at 404 King Street]. Extensively gutted in 1995-96 for reuse as an inn, the building is now entered from a new porte cochere on Meeting Street. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains newspaper articles (including 1984 DYKYC); building history from Architectural Guide to Charleston (by Simons & Thomas); two cut nails retrieved in 1995.
