GADSDEN.023-25.1a-bDescription
Two B&W photographs of the Samuel Wilson Houses (23 and 25 Gadsden Street):
a: 23 and 25 Gadsden Street, east (front) elevation.
b: 25 Gadsden Street, east (front) elevation.
Constructed circa 1880. At the death of Louis Sherfesee, who owned a parcel measuring 218 by 118 feet on Gadsden Street, a section of this lot was sold to Samuel Wilson. Wilson built two houses for investment purposes on the site. These two nearly identical single houses, with flat roofs extending over their southern-facing, double-tiered piazzas, retain their original Italianate door architraves and turned columns. The windows on 23 Gadsden have Italianate surrounds, while the lintels on 25 Gadsden are flat. Originally the houses had four-over-four light windows on the front elevation. The second story and windows on 23 Gadsden have been altered. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)Collection
