This book is about a particular group of American houses and historic sites from nearly all periods and in well more than half of the United States. They are preserved houses open to the public as history museums. Some are grand and were mansions when built, but as many are plain houses built for comfortable shelter long ago, when standards of convenience were different from today's. Sections include: the Old South, New England, the Mid-Atlantic, the Old Northwest, the Old Southwest, the South, the Midwest, the West, and the Pacific West.
