MONTAGU.008.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1883. Sarah Campbell, whose family also owned the property immediately to the west (10 Montagu), built this unique Charleston single house in the Second Empire style in around 1883. Mrs. Campbell's dwelling follows the normal single-house pattern with a double-tiered piazza and a pedimented door screen supported by Victorian style brackets. However, the entire building is surmounted by a Second Empire-style mansard roof over a deep cornice with alternating brackets and raised ovolo panels. A square turret projects from the second story through the roof, which has pedimented dormers.
