Constructed 1819-29. This 3-story residence, combining Neoclassical and Classical Revival detailing of the 1820s, survives as one of the most exuberant of Charleston's early-19th century single houses. Mrs. Elizabeth Schmidt, a widow, began construction of a brick dwelling shortly after her family acquired the lot in 1818. Living across the street without the means to complete the house, she sold the lot, with "an unfinished Brick Dwelling House and kitchen," in November 1828 to grain merchant Robert Eason Conner. Conner completed the building in 1829, died in 1840 and left the property in trust for his minor son. John Y. Stock, an exchange broker, bought the house and lived here for more than forty years. The Schmidt-Conner House, with its 3-story stuccoed mass, follows the typical single house pattern of a two-bay front, north-side interior end chimneys with stucco banding and double-tiered side piazzas. The piazza, however, distinctly relates the house to the Classical Revival style practiced by the Charlestonian Robert Mills, particularly evident in its banded Tuscan columns and its exceptional piazza door screen with an engaged columned architrave and a semicircular transom with muntins ornamented with a guilloche motif. A modern owner added the polygonal second- and third-story bays to accommodate bathrooms for the interior. Unlike many Charleston houses, this dwelling has been owner-occupied through nearly all of its history.
