MONTAGU.012.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1812; renovated 1900. This house was constructed for a mariner in 1812 on land bought by Capt. Daniel McNeill from the subdivision of the properties of plantation owner Benjamin Smith. Much of the Neoclassical detailing of the house was obscured in the early-20th century. Although the structure retains its original fenestration on the first two floors, George W. Egan, a contractor who built the Charleston jetties, added a third story and an extension with a polygonal bay connecting to the rear dependencies shortly after acquiring the property in 1900. Before Egan's purchase, the house passed through the Chisolm family to George Gibbs, the builder of 20 Elliott Street, who purchased it for the use of his daughter, Mrs. Caroline Blackwood. Mrs. Blackwood eventually married George W. Brown, a commission merchant. Although she died in 1882, her estate held onto her considerable properties in the area until 1894. A family member began construction of the neighboring house at 14 Montagu Street in 1885. The newer dwelling provides a late-19th century note amidst this concentration of antebellum architecture. Following the Queen Anne style, the 2-story, hipped-roof dwelling includes a wrapping piazza with turned columns and spindle work surmounted by an arched entry hood, a shingled second story, and gable styled dormers with Venetian windows.
Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); easement appraisal report and IRS form 8283; annual inspection reports; FOHG house histories (1981, 1997); newspaper articles (including 1971 DYKYC); handwritten staff research "source notes" (scant).
See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement).
No inspection photographs on file (see Easement Manager). No property management documentation on file (see Easement Manager). File may eventually contain requests for alterations, correspondence related to the management of the property, etc.Collection
