MONTAGU.013.1Scope and Content
Constructed before 1789. Jacob Williman, a successful butcher and tanner, bought a lot in the original Harleston Green section in the early 1780s. He lived on the site by 1790 and stayed until his death in 1813, when the property passed through his son, Dr. Jacob Williman, to the Schmidt family next door, which retained it until 1871. This 18th century style single house standing on a high masonry foundation boasts a one-story piazza protected from the street by a tall screen with beaded flush boarding, and a late Neoclassical style architrave and fanlighted, square transom. The low hipped roof, beaded weatherboard siding, and T-shaped central chimney stack indicate the building's 18th century origins. Its hall-parlor interior plan and woodwork actually hearken to earlier Georgian precedents. Even though the dwelling was transferred in 1871 with the proviso in the will that it was "in exceeding bad condition and falling into ruin," the Williman House retains enough historic fabric to represent the earliest dwellings in the village.
