24 Montagu Street (Bruckner-Cobia House)Entry/Object ID
MONTAGU.024.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1802-06. In one of Harleston Village's most picturesque settings, this 2½ story single house with a simple wrapping piazza provides a distinct impression of the early rural character of the neighborhood. The merchant Daniel Bruckner purchased this lot from a fellow German tradesman in 1801, and probably completed the house by 1806. Christiana Elizabeth Cobia, mother of Daniel Cobia, purchased the property shortly before completion of the family's house nearby at 20 Montagu Street. The Cobia family held the property through several generations, selling it in 1938. The house displays exterior details such as wide-beaded weatherboarding and a hipped roof, as well as interior features such as Federal-style woodwork and early hardware.
