Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1809. Defaced by later changes, including a late Greek Revival style piazza, two-over-two windows, the loss of the console brackets supporting its central pediment, and the alteration of its lunette window, this Federal house nonetheless retains its basic form as well as it hipped roof with corbeled and brick chimneys. Mrs. Hannah Groning, the wife of a merchant, built the house around 1809 and retained it until 1833. Converted into apartments in the 1940s, the house still features splendid Neoclassical mantels and wainscoting. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) Three files containing documentation and correspondence related to the covenant on the property (including "conceptual approval" letter); annual inspection reports; requests for alterations; correspondence related to the management of the property; Part I certification application (not executed); report "An Architectural Overview (Lounsbury, 2005); newspaper articles (DYKYC 1947, 1972 DYKYC); photocopy of plat (2005); data sheet for CharlestonWISE Impact Project (includes construction date, square footage, number of stories, building orientation, system materials/types, Sanborn Map research notes, and additions/alterations notes) (Mariah Schwartz, 2011); documentation of HCF's sale of the property through its Revolving Fund; appraisal (2005).
