MONTAGU.028.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1809. Defaced by later changes, including a late Greek Revival style piazza, two-over-two windows, the loss of the console brackets supporting its central pediment, and the alteration of its lunette window, this Federal house nonetheless retains its basic form as well as it hipped roof with corbeled and brick chimneys. Mrs. Hannah Groning, the wife of a merchant, built the house around 1809 and retained it until 1833. Converted into apartments in the 1940s, the house still features splendid Neoclassical mantels and wainscoting. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
