Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1850; rehabilitated 1975. The merchant Ettsel Adams built this 3-story brick side-hall, double-parlor house after his purchase in 1839 of the westernmost of the four lots belonging to Dr. Thomas Eveleigh. The dwelling retains its austere antebellum brickwork, its six-over-six windows, and its double-tiered Tuscan piazzas. A Victorian-style door hood was added, and other changes have been made to the entry from the sidewalk. Adams sold the house soon after construction, and it eventually became the property of the Hart family, who used it as a tenement while renting a residence for themselves on Wragg Mall. Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); FOHG house history (1995); house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; structural inspection report (1996); photo of front facade in Preservation Progress article about Harleston Village (May 1972). Files may eventually contain annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property. No easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement) on file; only digital inspection photographs available (see Easement Manager).
