MONTAGU.030-34.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1854. Attributed to Edward C. Jones, architect. Apparently planned as a portion of a four-to-six-unit row of dwellings, these Italianate villa-style houses may have been designed by Charleston architect Edward C. Jones, noted for using similar detailing in his design for Roper Hospital. Dr. Christopher G. White built the easternmost single dwelling, but upon default on his payments, it was acquired by a member of the Tobias family, which owned all three dwellings at the time of the Civil War. The house at 30 Montagu Street probably lost its interior during its conversion to three apartments in the early 20th century, but the houses at 32 and 34 Montagu Street have generally remained single family residences and have retained their original interior features. A cast-iron fence and a double gate with allegorical figures adorn the entrance into 34 Montagu Street. (Buildings of Charleston, Poston.)
