39 Montagu Street (Harriet R. Simons House)Entry/Object ID
MONTAGU.039.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1881. Harriet R. Simons built a Queen Anne version of the traditional side-hall, double-parlor plan Charleston single house more than a decade after the Civil War. Retaining the typical closed-gable end and tripartite window known on Greek Revival houses, Mrs. Simons' dwelling -- with its bracketed entry hood, front bay window, two-over-two windows, and deep entablature -- relates to buildings built on Broad and New streets in the same period. Larger suburban properties in the neighborhood were frequently divided into smaller lots after 1865. This house was built on a lot subdivided from one of the Rutledge Avenue properties. The Deveaux family, leaders in the local Democratic Party, rented the house from 1914 to 1922, before building a new house at 7 Gadsden Street.
