MONTAGU.040.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1891-94; restored 1963. In the 1890s, a wholesale grocery manager built a Queen Anne style dwelling with certain Eastlake overtones on a newly created lot at 40 Montagu Street. Constructed in the same time period as houses at 36 and 38 Montagu Street, the exuberant Wohlers House follows a multi-cross-gable plan with varying spindle-work detailing in its first-floor entry porch and its second-story front balcony. The front gable, with triple windows and shell-work patterning in its upper part, flanks a west double-tiered piazza with spindle-work detailing similar to that in the front entry. Passing through numerous owners, the Wohlers House was restored as apartments in 1963 by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Woodward, who also restored the I. Jenkins Mikell House next door at 94 Rutledge Avenue.
File contains FOHG house history of 40-A Montagu and 40-B Montagu (both undated); garden notes for 94 Rutledge Avenue(1976) and sketch of garden (unattributed, undated); research notes (undated, unattributed).Collection
