44 Montagu Street (John Harleston Read House)Entry/Object ID
MONTAGU.044.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1847; restored 1946. John Harleston Read, a grandson of the developer of Harleston Village, built this 2½ story dwelling with a front-facing double-tiered piazza set back at some distance from Montagu Street. The dominance of the second story of the house, with its front porches, long windows, and three gabled dormers, is reminiscent of Creole style houses in New Orleans. Read died at the beginning of the Civil War, and the house passed through many owners and tenants before restoration in 1946. A recessed piazza on the north side overlooks a brick courtyard leading to stable and kitchen buildings, now restored as separate residences.
