MONTAGU.062.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1854-60. A member of a wealthy lumber mill family, Jonathan Steinmeyer, acquired this significant corner lot in Harleston Village in 1854, purchasing it from Keating L. Simons. Although briefly conveyed after the war to Elias Horlbeck, the house became the property of Samuel Prioleau Ravenel in 1872. Ravenel, scion of an old Huguenot plantation family, joined the ranks of Charleston's rising industrialists in the postbellum period with his interest in the Coosaw Mining Company, a phosphate extracting firm. Long cited by the city and by preservationists as one of Charleston's most visibly dilapidated antebellum dwellings, the Steinmeyer House still retains much of its original historic fabric. A staircase on Gadsden Street approaches a raised entry to the principal levels. On these floors wooden piazzas with fluted Doric columns face southward. These at one time afforded view across the marshes to the Ashley River. A large wooden dependency building survives to the north and remains with the property as a separate residence. (Poston. Buildings of Charleston.)
