Contains Mayor Courtenay's Annual Review and reports from: City Finances; Street Department; Health Department; Department of Charities; Department of Public Trusts; Port of Charleston; Police Department; Public Markets; Public Pleasure Grounds; City Lands and Public Buildings; Education in Charleston; and various other department reports. Appendix includes "Sketch of the History of Charleston, S.C." (1670-1776, after the Revolution), which contains reports of the cultivation of rice, cotton, and indigo; statistics on the slave trade; the destruction of old St. Philip's Church in 1835; the Great Fire of April 27, 1838. Appendix also includes "Papers from the Tenth Census: Commercial Statistics, Destructive Fires, Hurricanes, Earthquakes, Excessive Heat and Cold, Record of Extreme Longevity, and Other Interesting Papers," with reports on the cotton and rice trade, naval stores trade, lumber trade, phosphates and fertilizers, etc. Includes the following illustrations: Map of Charleston--The Harbor and Vicinity, with tables of the growth in production in 11 states, and population and import/export tables from various countries Map of Charles Town in 1671 Map of Charles Town in 1704 Map of Charles Town (undated) Map of Charles Town with its Entrenchments Map of the Present City of Charleston. viii, 320 p., [6] folded leaves : ill., maps ; 25 cm.
