Constructed 1914. Albert W. Todd, architect. Albert Todd, a native South Carolinian, moved his architectural practice from Augusta, Georgia, to Charleston in 1899 and designed a number of projects in and around the city, including several structures at the Citadel, the main building for the Medical University of South Carolina, and the town hall for Sullivan's Island. Himself an elected official, as a member of the state legislature from 1910 to 1924, Todd designed this Neoclassical Revival style residence for Mayor Tristram T. Hyde in 1914. Hyde, initially defeated in his run for mayor in 1911, was elected in 1915 and served two 4-year terms. Considered a representative of the old aristocracy, Hyde was noted for his ability to lead a "Sunday school delegation in a parade [while] countenancing an alliance with bootleggers." The 2-story, Ionic-columned portico fronts a large pressed-brick house with Neoclassical door and window trim. In keeping with Charleston tradition, a side piazza extends from the west elevation of the building. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
