CHURCH.082.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1782; altered late 19th century. The Scottish Presbyterian merchant William Mills gave this property to his son Thomas in 1799. City directories indicate that the elder Mills lived on this or a neighboring site at least a decade prior to the transfer from father to son; thus it is possible that the younger sibling, the famous architect Robert Mills, spent a portion of his youth in this house. A recently discovered drawing shows this building originally standing as a Charleston single house with a ground story shop on the Church Street side; a second story, covered, wrought-iron balcony; and a hipped roof; and a rear wall and kitchen divided by a yard from the small 3-story building at 84 Church Street. A late-19th century renovation created an addition to the north, incorporating the dependency and work yard; this resulted in the removal of much of the original detailing.
File contains portion of plat showing proposed dividing line requested from Board of Adjustment (1999) (no indication of approval status); photocopy drawings showing the brick house and kitchen at the NE corner of Church and Tradd Streets (unattributed, undated); 1886 Earthquake damage assessment; Hurricane Hugo damage assessment.Collection
