Scope and Content

Constructed 1885-86; altered 20th century. H.L. Graddick, an African American mariner, and/or his son, H.T. Graddick, captain of the schooner Robert E. Lee, constructed this Greek Revival style single house as a residence more than a decade after this type of construction passed out of fashion. The building retains its six-over-six sash windows, plain Greek Revival style door architraves, and tripartite window set in the front closed gable. Several years ago a subsequent owner removed the original piazzas and added a discordant Colonial Revival style portico and L-shaped addition. Graddick also constructed two small freedman's cottages on the lots immediately to the south. John Ahrens built another freedman's cottage at 13 Council Street before 1890, and he was also the owner of 14 Council Street. The large L-shaped cottage at 14 Council Street retains its original wrap-around chimneys, while the more diminutive 16 Council Street retains its simple two-bay front facade with closed gable, despite numerous additions to the rear. File contains newspaper article (1961 DYKYC).
