FTLAMAR.1685.1Scope and Content
A component of the Secessionville Historic District, this Greek Revival residence constructed ca. 1858 by William Benjamin Seabrook and subsequently sold the same year to Edward Freer, a leading James Island planter. During the Civil War, tradition indicates that the house served as headquarters for Confederate troops stationed at Secessionville. At this time the house is said to have undergone damage from Union shelling. In 1873, became the manse for the James Island Presbyterian Church and served as the manse until 1918, when it was purchased by Franklin Pierce Seabrook, grandson of the original builder of the house. File contains a set of architectural drawings (Richard Marks Restoration, 2010) that includes floor plans, elevations, photocopy of historic (1911) photograph; application for State Residential Historic Preservation Tax Credit which provides some house history and describes current condition of the house (Jan. 2011). Note
Notes: Given to archivist by April Wood, Manager of Easements, in February 2011. It was a possible easement that was not finalized. The house is a "twin" of the William Seabrook House, on which HCF does have an easement, so drawings may be used as a reference.
