9 New Street ( James J. Igoe House).Entry/Object ID
NEW.009.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1887. James J. Igoe, a harbor pilot, constructed this 2-story, side-hall, double-parlor-plan house for his family shortly after the earthquake of 1886. Reflecting Charleston's general postwar conservatism, the house is distinguishable from Greek Revival examples of this type by its low hipped roof, Queen Anne style columns on its double-tiered piazza, and its Italianate style door hood. Like several Victorian houses in the area, its entry is approached by a flight of stone steps with a wrought-iron balustrade. Also in 1887 Joseph Thompson, who lived at 134 Tradd Street, built similarly styled dwellings at 13 and 15 New Street. Although both are somewhat disfigured by side piazza enclosures, these structures retain Italianate style bay windows with engaged balustrades and double bracketed cornices.
File contains graduate student report (Rebecca Long, 2010) on the history of the house, which includes historical and chain-of-title research, maps, plats, photos, titles/deeds, and other supporting documentation.Collection
