Scope and Content

Orange Street was cut along the eastern boundary of the Orange Garden, a public pleasure garden for concerts and other events, by Alexander Petrie in 1767. Petrie divided land on the west side of the street into building lots. Lots on the east side were taken from the rear of lots facing on King Street. The Orange Garden and the street were named for the orange trees that were planted there. An architecturally diverse street, houses in this area date from 1770 to the 1990s. (Tour Guide Manual, 2011) File contains narrative history by Bernard L. Herman (undated); research notes and supporting documentation from city directories, maps, etc. (undated and unattributed but possibly written and compiled by Bernard Herman).
