96.3.1Description
Gilt Bronze Empire Chandelier fitted with 18 candle sockets. French, c. 1830. All cast sections are of gilt bronze. Brass body sections lacquered. Convex lower brass pan holds 6 suspension sections and 6 triple candle socket extensions. Lower section of pan decorated with large gilt floral disk and smaller finial sections. Large upward curving top disk separated from lower pan by gilt bronze leaf band. At top of upper body are two gilt bronze rings, the upper one in leaf design. Brass dome fits inside top leaf ring. Gilt bronze urn rests on top of dome. Candle arms are elaborate floral design with removable drip pans around candles. Suspension rods consisting of brass sleeve and gilt bronze ends secured together with iron rod. Three such rods joined together with "S" hooks attached to each of the six suspension sections and the companion gilt suspension rings from top suspension section. Top suspension section has ring at top center for hanging from ceiling and two gilt bronze bands, the top in leaf form, the lower band is a simple base to which the decorated suspension rings are attached. Underside of top suspension section has concave brass disck with gilt floral disk underneath and smaller finial sections at center.

Two of the original rods are missing, and are replaced with link chain. . One of the arms is bent and is also missing the bobeche. The original links between the rods have been lost and replaced with S hooks.
The piece was very dust when removed for cleaning on June 21, 2005.
All pieces were taken apart to remove it from its hook.
The iron rod has a thin brass covering in two sections. The lower section has a long crack. (See digital photographs).Provenance
