Name/Title

9-11 Orange Street (Simons Tenements)

Entry/Object ID

ORANGE.009-11.1

Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1770. Built as a 3½ story double tenement just before the Revolution, the northern house (11 Orange Street) retains most of its original detailing. The exterior of the south residence (9 Orange Street), however, had some mid-19th century alterations. The Reverend Samuel Gilman and his wife, the author Caroline Gilman, lived most of their married life at 11 Orange Street. Gilman, the pastor of the Unitarian Church, wrote the poem "Fair Harvard" for his alma mater, while Caroline Gilman edited the first American magazine for children. File contains FOHG garden history (1997); planting plan (sketch) of garden; house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; measured floor plan; Rosen and Associates (engineers) inspection report (2010).
