The Inventory of Lucretia Constance Radcliffe: The Material World of Elites in Federal Period Charleston, South CarolinaEntry/Object ID
2012.002.068Description
Because Lucretia Constance Radcliffe died without leaving a will detailing the distribution of her estate, the State intervened to sell her property and possessions at public auction and to divide the proceeds as it saw fit. Robert Bentham remained in Charleston to assess the value of the contents of the home, and in the weeks following, his letters to his wife detailed the sale of Lucretia Radcliffe's possessions and provide a dramatic and unusually detailed portrait of Charleston elite interiors of this time. (Abstract, p. 4)
Radcliffe House (also known as the Radcliffe-King Mansion) was located at the corner of George Street and Meeting Street (ca. 24 George Street).
