Scope and Content

The southern edge of the Ansonborough neighborhood burned in the fire of 1861, and when rebuilt it was characterized by a mix of small wooden single houses and freedmen's cottages. The north side of the western end contained mostly brick single houses with businesses interspersed, while the south side contained several livery stables, including those associated with the Charleston Hotel. The finest surviving house on the street is 46 Pinckney Street, built in 1852 by Jacob Rabb after he purchased the lot from the neighboring Methodist Episcopal Church. After removing an old engine house from the site, he seems to have constructed the present building, a typical brick single house with a pilastered brick gable end and slate roof. As one of the only antebellum brick dwellings surviving on the street, the Rabb House stands out from the neighboring industrial structures and simple wooden dwellings constructed after the Civil War, such as the freedmen's cottages at 14 and 17 Pinckney Street and the small wooden single houses at 18 and 19 Pinckney Street. File contains entry from The Units of Charleston by E. Milby Burton; page listing Pinckney Street residents from an early Census (date not indicated).
