PITT.005.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1830. The Lanneau family built this stuccoed side-hall-plan house at 5 Pitt Street around 1830. A small Greek Revival portico fronts the entry door for this flat roofed dwelling. In the early-20th century this house became the home of Carrie and Mabel Pollitzer, sisters active in suffrage, art, and music circles. Harriet Pollitzer became an international socialite after her marriages first to Huntington Hartford, heir to the A&P fortune, and later to Prince Pignatelli. Their other sister, Anita Pollitzer, was a friend and biographer of Georgia O'Keeffe. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains graduate student report (Jenny Brant, 2019) on the history of the house, which includes historical and chain-of-title research, maps, photos, and other supporting documentation; FOHG house history (2003); handwritten staff research "source notes" (scant).
