Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1838; restored 1971. In keeping with the system of marriage settlements, this property was conveyed in trust in 1837 for Emily Rutledge Parker, daughter of John Parker, upon her marriage to the merchant Theodore Gaillard. Mrs. Gaillard apparently lived here by 1840 and stayed until 1852 when the house was leased to the merchant Augustus Jones. Mrs. Gaillard's trustee sold the house in 1887 to Mrs. Julia Boag, a widow. Typical of 2½ story masonry single houses built in uptown Charleston, the front gable end is separated from the main body of the house by a corbeled brick band. A double-tiered piazza shades the western elevation of the building, and a late-19th century ell addition joins the house to a dependency. In 1940 the structure was turned into apartments. The restoration of the house in 1971 marked one of the first revitalization projects in this part of Harleston Village. File contains newspaper article (with photograph) (1971 DYKYC).
