31 Pitt Street (John M. Schnierle House)Entry/Object ID
PITT.031.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1830-40. John Schnierle, a German carpenter, bought this lot from a Virginia physician in 1817. Although he and his family continued to live on Friend (now Legare) Street, Schnierle apparently built this house in the 1830s. It stands 2½ stories tall on a raised brick basement and has weatherboard sheathing. A closed gable end faces the street, while a 2-tier piazza faces a sizable side lot. Schnierle died in 1846, and his property was partitioned among his sons, John and William, and his daughters, who had married other prominent German families, the Seiglings and the Horlbecks.
