PITT.073.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1832. The saddler William Waller built this 2½ story single house after acquiring the site in 1832 from Daniel Johnston, a butcher and member of Charleston's free Black community. Richard Holloway probably acted as the contractor for this building since the modified Palladian window in the front gable and other features show similarities to Holloway's other work. In the late-19th century another prominent African-American family, the DeCostas, owned the property and probably made the minor Italianate style changes, including the bracketed cornice and Italianate piazza door screen. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
