PITT.082.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1843. This 2½ story brick single house is a good example of the suburban development that blossomed as Charleston's expanding antebellum population pushed development north up the peninsula. The builders of this house appear to have been two entrepreneurs: Septimus Sanders, a barber whose business was located at 43 Broad Street, and Joseph A. Sanders, a bricklayer. The Sanders's acquired the property in 1843 and built a residence there, which was owned briefly by William Bell, a planter, and then by Mrs. Sarah O'Hear. Joseph Sanders then purchased the house in 1846, and the trustees of his estate acquired it the following year for his widow, Laura Sanders. Like many suburban Charleston houses, 82 Pitt Street is set back so that a small lawn separates the house from activity on the street. The interior of this residence contains decorative elements in the Federal style, one indication of the cautious tastes of its builders and their clients. Its remarkably intact rear dependency was apparently joined to the main house in the 1870s by a hyphen addition. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
Five files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence, Confirmation of Understanding, and conceptual approval; Part I certification (National Register); correspondence related HCF's interest in the house and to the sale of the property; easement appraisal report and IRS form 8283; annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; architectural drawings; sample of decorative facing from mantel; newspaper articles (including 1972, 1980 DYKYC); historical/chain-of-title research information; measured floor plan; reduced-size copy of HABS drawing of the Kitchen Building; plat of 82 Pitt Street ("owned by Maria M.
