Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1827. A successful rice planter from the Mount Pleasant area built this massive double house with its side to the street, in the single house manner, in about 1827. The structure stands on a brick foundation and has a weatherboarded facade with four bays, a closed gable on the street side, and a double-tiered, Tuscan-columned piazza that faces a large garden lot. Past the piazza door screen a staircase rises to the main elevation and the front entry, which is surmounted by a fanlight with a decorative eagle carving. The original lot underwent subdivision on several occasions, including the 1841 severance of the property known as 82 Pitt Street. Whilden, who owned substantial town property in the developing Village of Mouny Pleasant, retained this as a townhouse for several years. The house was owned by the T.A. Wilbur family at the time of the earthquake of 1886. After the earthquake the house was rated in good condition except for collapsed chimneys. File contains Rosen and Associates (engineers) inspection report (1994). No additional information on file. Needs further research.
