Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1785-87; restored 1930s, 1996-97. The house of an English merchant, James Osmond, was destroyed on this site in the fire of 1778. Passing to another English merchant, the site was conveyed to one of Charleston's leading mercantile firms, who built the present 4-story dwelling with a low hipped roof prior to 1788. A series of merchants including British capitalists Thomas Hingham of England and Charles Hubert owned the property prior to the Civil War, after which it was sold to Luder Sahlmann, who used it as a storage warehouse for his feed-and-grain business next door. A small gauged railway ran through the present entry door, which was a covered passage through the building. In this condition, the house was acquired by Louise Graves, founder of the Slave Mart Museum with her sister, and restored as a residence. The building retains its original fenestration including large shop style windows on the first story and belt courses between floors; the slightly longer windows on the second story indicating that this was the floor used for entertaining. The former shop entry was replaced by a window moved from the rear of the house at the time of restoration. The interior is largely intact and contains woodwork, particularly on the second story, with transitional Georgian/Neoclassical moldings. The house was restored by a restoration architect for use as his own residence in 1997. File contains Rosen and Associates (engineers) inspection report (2005).
