Scope and Content

Constructed 1782-84; renovated ca. 1890; rehabilitated ca. 1970. The only house in Rainbow Row to retain its Victorian storefront, this dwelling was built by Lewis Dutarque, a planter of Huguenot descent, after he acquired the site in 1778. He sold it to John Robertson in 1784. The house again changed hands in 1797 and served successively as merchants' offices, a notary's office, and a paint store. In 1890 Giovanni Domenico Guida, an Italian immigrant, bought the house and added the pressed metal storefront, window heads, and entablature emblazoned with the name "Guida"; it was held by Guida's family as a grocery store until the 1960s. Anna Wells Rutledge, who also owned 103 East Bay Street, purchased it in 1970 keeping the storefront in its evolved state. (Source: The Buildings of Charleston.) File contains newspaper article (1979 DYKYC); house history from City of Charleston Tour Guide Training Manual. See Media link for 1886 Earthquake Damage Assessment.
